Andrew Leonard: Peak Oil? Don’t Worry — Obama’s On the Job

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

What if, as a result of efforts to fight climate change and boost energy efficiency, global oil demand peaked in the foreseeable future? You could argue that such an achievement would be one of the most historic accomplishments of human civilization to date, proof, indeed, that we are civilized. It’s a task that will require lots of hard work all over the globe, but based just on the actions taken by President Obama in his first year of office, in the United States, we have made real progress toward that goal.

The International Energy Agency, reports Spencer Swartz in the Wall Street Journal, is predicting that even if China and India continue to consume ever more oil, overall, the world’s appetite for crude is slowing down. [more...]

Daniel Ellsberg: Obama Fears Military Revolt

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Paul Jay, senior producer of The Real News Network, interviewed former military analyst and Pentagon whistle-blower Daniel Ellsberg about the common thread between the conflict in Afghanistan and the war in Vietnam.

Like Vietnam, Ellsberg said “no victory lies ahead [for the US] in Afghanistan” and President Barack Obama knows it.

Still, Ellsberg believes Obama will “go against his own instincts as to what’s best for the country and do what’s best for him and his administration and his party in the short run facing elections, which is to avoid a military revolt.” [more...]

Washington Post: White House Quietly Authorizes 13,000 More Troops for Afghanistan

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

“President Obama announced in March that he would be sending 21,000 additional troops to Afghanistan. But in an unannounced move, the White House has also authorized — and the Pentagon is deploying — at least 13,000 troops beyond that number, according to defense officials.

The additional troops are primarily support forces, including engineers, medical personnel, intelligence experts and military police. Their deployment has received little mention by officials at the Pentagon and the White House, who have spoken more publicly about the combat troops who have been sent to Afghanistan.

The deployment of the support troops to Afghanistan brings the total increase approved by Obama to 34,000. The buildup has raised the number of U.S. troops deployed to the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan above the peak during the Iraq “surge” that President George W. Bush ordered, officials said.”

Truthout: Obama Administration Accused Again of Concealing Bush-Era Crimes

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

“…the Obama administration has sought to conceal information in several high-profile court cases, in an effort that civil libertarians say amounts to covering up crimes committed by the Bush administration.

Last week, in a federal courthouse in New York, Obama’s Justice Department attorneys again argued in favor of secrecy. The case involved 23 lawyers representing detainees at Guantánamo Bay who alleged in court papers that they were targets of the Bush administration’s so-called Terrorist Surveillance Program(TSP), an initiative operated by the National Security Agency (NSA) that Obama called “unlawful and unconstitutional” during his presidential campaign in 2007.”

Matt Taibbi: The Anti-Cult of Personality

Monday, October 12th, 2009

“There are plenty of rational reasons to disapprove of the Obama administration. There are plenty of curious policy decisions in his history already and he has already drawn plenty of real ideological lines in the sand that people looking to whine about something could whine about, if they so chose.

But instead of that, the opponents of Barack Obama seem determined to make a villain out of him almost solely on the basis of his completely innocent and irrelevant behaviors. Instead of bitching at him for things like giving away billions of dollars via his Public-Private Investment Program — a natural rallying cry for conservatives, you would think — they’re constantly getting on his balls about stuff that has no relevance to anything at all, much less the conservative-liberal divide. It’s almost as though the haters have an emotional attachment to the notion of Obama as being guilty of and responsible for everything, from bad weather to the lack of good movies outside of District 9 to the flattening out of Brandon Webb’s sinker.”

Meghan McCain: Obama’s Gay Dodge

Monday, October 12th, 2009

I would just argue that it’s incumbent on not just the gay community, but all Americans, to demand repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

“…I have two brothers serving in the military and as far as I’m concerned, when an Arabic translator is kicked out of the military for being gay, it quite literally makes my brothers and our troops less safe. For me, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell isn’t just an equality issue. It is also a national-security issue…”

McClatchy: Obama to Visit New Orleans on Thursday

Monday, October 12th, 2009

” “It seems like the Obama team through FEMA has come in with a whole new attitude that says, ‘Let’s cut through the red tape so we can get to building,’” said New Orleans City Council president Arnie Fielkow.

The administration’s August announcement of a new arbitration process could be a turning point for stalled health, school, road, public safety and environmental work.

Still, even as Obama pushes for a health care overhaul in Congress, there’s a struggle in New Orleans to get federal funds for building a much-needed public hospital. Louisiana leaders are also working to prevent the federal government from cutting $700 million from the state’s Medicaid funds after hurricane recovery payments artificially spiked the state’s per capita income.

Howard Zinn: Nobel Prize for Promises?

Monday, October 12th, 2009

“I was dismayed when I heard Obama was given the Nobel Peace Prize. A shock, really, to think that a president carrying on wars in two countries and launching military action in a third country (Pakistan), would be given a peace prize. But then I recalled that Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt and Henry Kissinger had all received Nobel Peace Prizes. The Nobel Committee is famous for its superficial estimates and for its susceptibility to rhetoric and empty gestures, while ignoring blatant violations of world peace…”

Barack Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Friday, October 9th, 2009

In a stunning announcement, President Obama was awarded the prize “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” But  given that he hasn’tcome close to establishing peace anywhere on Earth, and frankly, doesn’t appear to even be trying at this point, isn’t this really because he’s not George W. Bush, and the rest of the world is just SO relieved about that…?
