Glenn Greenwald: CNN On the New “Huge, Huge Bomb” We Can Use On Iran

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

[Now we know why the U.S. is so irked about Iran storing weapons so deep underground -- because then it's a lot harder for us to destroy them...]

Here is Wolf Blitzer and Barbara Starr talking last night on CNN about the Iranians and what the U.S. might to do them; it’s really pitch-perfect:

BLITZER: Regarding Iran, a new report raises some disturbing possibilities about its nuclear program, and that’s prompting fears from the United States over how to respond.

Let’s bring in our Pentagon correspondent, Barbara Starr.

Barbara, what are you learning?

BARBARA STARR, CNN PENTAGON CORRESPONDENT: Well, Wolf, the latest report from the International Atomic Energy Agency suggests Iran could — could be hiding more secret nuclear sites, and that is raising the stakes on all sides.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

STARR (voice-over): Iran’s once secret underground nuclear fuel enrichment plant.  The Pentagon is worried Iran is now burying weapons factories so deep, that the current arsenal of bombs can’t reach them, leaving the U.S. with no viable military option if a strike was ever ordered.

This new Air Force 15-ton bomb may change that calculation.

JOHN PIKE, GLOBALSECURITY.ORG: We’d certainly be able to take this out with a massive ordnance penetrator, the 30,000-pound boss.

STARR: This is the massive ordnance penetrator, or MOP, now being rushed into development to be carried on B-2 and B-52 bombers. The most likely targets? Iran and North Korea, which are believed to have buried weapons facilities hundreds of feet underground or into the sides of mountains.

PIKE: Some of those would probably require this massive ordnance penetrator simply because they are buried so deep and no other bomb would be able to certainly destroy them.

STARR: At 30,000 pounds, the MOP, some experts say, will be able to penetrate 650 feet of concrete, a significant boost over current bunker-busting bombs like the 2,000-pound BLU-109, which can penetrate just six feet of concrete, and the 5,000-pound GBU-28 which can go through about 20 feet of concrete.

GEOFF MORRELL, PENTAGON SPOKESMAN: This has been a capability that we have long believed was missing from our quiver, our arsenal, and we wanted to make sure we’ve filled in that gap.

STARR: No air strikes against North Korea or Iran appear to be in the works, but Iran says it could start enriching uranium here in the next two years, and both the U.S. and Israel want to ensure that Iran cannot manufacture and assemble a nuclear weapon.

All of this has now led to more funding for the MOP. The Pentagon plans to have the first bombs available by December 2010, two years earlier than planned.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

STARR: Now, the Pentagon likes to say it’s not helpful to speculate on future military targets, but certainly this weapon gives the Pentagon, Wolf, an option it hasn’t had before — Wolf.

BLITZER: It’s a huge, huge bomb, Barbara. Thanks very much for that. [more...]

Associated Press: Feds Move to Seize NYC Mosques, Skyscraper Linked to Iran

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

NEW YORK – Federal prosecutors took steps Thursday to seize four U.S. mosques and a Fifth Avenue skyscraper owned by a nonprofit Muslim organization long suspected of being secretly controlled by the Iranian government.

In what could prove to be one of the biggest counterterrorism seizures in U.S. history, prosecutors filed a civil complaint in federal court against the Alavi Foundation, seeking the forfeiture of more than $500 million in assets.

The assets include bank accounts; Islamic centers consisting of schools and mosques in New York City, Maryland, California and Houston; more than 100 acres in Virginia; and a 36-story glass office tower in New York.

Confiscating the properties would be a sharp blow against Iran, which has been accused by the U.S. government of bankrolling terrorism and trying to build a nuclear bomb.

A telephone call and e-mail to Iran’s U.N. Mission seeking comment were not immediately answered. Nor was a call to the Alavi Foundation.

It is extremely rare for U.S. law enforcement authorities to seize a house of worship, a step fraught with questions about the First Amendment right to freedom of religion.

The action against the Shiite Muslim mosques is sure to inflame relations between the U.S. government and American Muslims, many of whom are fearful of a backlash after last week’s Fort Hood shooting rampage, blamed on a Muslim American major. [more...]

Reuters: IAEA Finds “Nothing to Be Worried About” at Iran Nuclear site

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

VIENNA (Reuters) – U.N. inspectors found “nothing to be worried about” in a first look at a previously secret uranium enrichment site in Iran last month, the International Atomic Energy chief said in remarks published Thursday.

Mohamed ElBaradei also told the New York Times that he was examining possible compromises to unblock a draft nuclear cooperation deal between Iran and three major powers that has foundered over Iranian objections.

The nuclear site, which Iran revealed in September three years after diplomats said Western spies first detected it, added to Western fears of covert Iranian efforts to develop atom bombs. Iran says it is enriching uranium only for electricity. [more...]

Haaretz: Israel Tests Missile Defenses with U.S.

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

Israel and the United States launched a major air defense drill [ten days ago] which will include a preparation for a faceoff with Iran.

During the two-week maneuvers, dubbed Juniper Cobra, some 1,000 American personnel will mesh ground- and ship-based missile interceptors like the Aegis, THAAD and Patriot with Israel’s Arrow II ballistic shield, defense officials said…

Reuters: Israel and U.S. Launch Major Air Defense Drills Today; Deny Drills Are A Message To Iran

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

TEL AVIV (Reuters) – Israel and the United States launched a major air defense drill Wednesday as part of what Israeli public radio called preparation for a faceoff with Iran.

During the two-week maneuvers, dubbed Juniper Cobra, some 1,000 American personnel will mesh ground- and ship-based missile interceptors like the Aegis, THAAD and Patriot with Israel’s Arrow II ballistic shield, defense officials said.

Spokesmen on both sides insisted the biennial drill was unrelated to world events, but Israel Radio quoted an unnamed commander as saying it served “to prepare for a nuclear Iran.”

Reuters: Iran Threatens U.S. and Britain After Revolutionary Guard Attack

Monday, October 19th, 2009

[Because, really, we just want their oil and their natural gas. - Ed.]

The head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on Monday vowed to “retaliate” against the United States and Britain after accusing them of backing the perpetrators of a suicide bombing that killed six Guards… [which threatens] to overshadow talks between Iran and global powers in Vienna on Monday intended to tackle a standoff about Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Truthout: Suicide Bomber Kills 31 In Attack On Iran’s Revolutionary Guard

Tehran – A suicide bomber killed six senior Revolutionary Guards commanders, including two of its top officers, and 25 other people on Sunday in one of the boldest attacks against Iran’s most powerful military institution.

Washington Note: Israeli President Shimon Peres Acknowledges That Iranian “Threat” Is Directly Related to Palestinian Issue

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

“Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, reopened today after a long break for the summer and the Jewish holidays. In line with protocol, Israel’s president opened the winter session and Shimon Peres had this to say on the linkage between reaching peace with the Palestinians and addressing the Iran issue:

In my opinion, if we move forwards with peace and make peace with the Palestinians, and if we start negotiations with Syria and Lebanon, we will remove the main pretext for the Iranian madness – against us and against the other residents of this region. (President Peres, October 12th in the Israeli Knesset).

Now Mr. Peres is in reality not exactly the dove he is portrayed to be (he authorized many of the settlements, he supported Israel’s recent wars with Lebanon and Gaza, and he never really earned his own Nobel peace prize), but this was nonetheless an interesting acknowledgment of the linkage from Israel’s head of state – and it seems to directly contradict the messaging coming from Israel’s ambassador to Washington D.C., Michael Oren…”

Al Jazeera: U.S. Will Hold Off On Iran Sanctions

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

The US believes this is not the time to impose more sanctions against Iran as part of its push to get the country to end its nuclear programme.

Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, emphasised co-operation with Moscow on the atomic issue in statements on Tuesday after talks with Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister.”

Why Does Iran Want to Enrich Uranium Themselves If They’re Not Seeking to Build Nuclear Weapons?

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Juan Cole proposes something called “nuclear latency,” which “would allow the production of an atomic bomb on short notice if an extreme danger to national autonomy reared its ugly head.” And the reason for the new facility at Qom is because the existing facility at Natanz is “too easily bombed or struck with missiles.”

Are we seeing the terrible irony here? The U.S. and Israel have been rattling sabres at Iran for several years now — recall that during the 2008 primaries, Hillary Clinton threatened to “totally obliterate” Iran if they attacked Israel. Because of this near-constant barrage of threats, Iran rightly fears that their nuclear facility may be bombed, so they rushed to build a new one in a more remote area of the country. They also know that both the U.S. and Israel have nuclear weapons, and have been openly stating that they would be willing to use them on Iran.

Since Iran’s Supreme Leader has been clear that “no Islamic state may possess or use atomic weapons because they willy nilly kill masses of innocent civilians when used, which is contrary to the Islamic law of war (which forbids killing innocent non-combatants)”, why are we really so obsessed with Iran? Richard Heinberg spelled out the reasons quite nicely in his excellent 2005 piece in Energy Bulletin entitled Onward to Iran. We have no control over them, whatsoever, since we have no bases there, and Iran is the second-largest exporter of oil in the world. You do the math…
